The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources caught a bear cub Saturday afternoon that had been roaming near Spanish Fork since at least Monday.

The young, 80-pound female was treed in a drainage area just south of Spanish Oaks Golf Course, said Division of Wildlife Resources spokesman Shawn Bagley. The bear was spotted several times throughout the week near the golf course and nearby homes, according to a news release from the Spanish Fork Police Department.

Officials used drugs to immobilize the bear, Bagley said, and took it out of harms way.

The bear was "just a public safety issue," Bagley said.

While the bear hadn't been aggressive, the police release advised people to be cautious and watch children and pets when in the area. It also said wildlife officials had set a live bear trap Monday in hopes of catching the cub and relocating it.

They estimated that the bear is 12 to 18 months old.
