A West Valley City man has been charged with attempted murder and numerous weapons counts in connection with a gang-related shooting last month on State Route 201 that seriously injured another driver.

Jimmy Alexis Lopez Jr., 18, was charged earlier this week in 3rd District Court with two counts of first-degree felony attempted murder, as well as second-degree felony counts of felony discharge of a firearm with injury and possession of a firearm by restricted person, and five third-degree felony counts of discharge of a firearm.

On Sept. 20 at about 4:30 p.m., the 18-year-old shooting victim was driving an SUV west on SR 201 near 2700 West and 3500 South with a 15-year-old passenger when a red sedan pulled up next to them, charges state.

The red car driver, identified by the 15-year-old as Lopez, fired six shots at the SUV, charges state.

One of the bullets struck the victim near the armpit. The 15-year-old was not injured.

The 15-year-old later told police that just before the shooting began, he heard Lopez yell, "Norte," charges state.

Charges state that Lopez is a documented gang member. He was being held at the Salt Lake County jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

An initial court appearance was set for Thursday.

At the time of the shooting, Lopez was on probation for 2015 convictions of third-degree felony possession of a firearm by a restricted person and class A misdemeanor attempted possession of a controlled substance.

In March 2015, police officers called to a West Valley City motel on a report of a possible domestic dispute and drug use, found Lopez and a 16-year-old girl in possession of marijuana, methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, vodka and a 9mm handgun, according to court documents.

Earlier this year, Lopez was charged in two alleged gang-related misdemeanor assault cases in which he is accused of beating other individuals, and using a stun gun on one of them.

He also was charged this year with violating a protective order by contacting his ex-girlfriend by telephone.

All three cases are set for disposition in December.
