At Utah Facial Plastics, they think outside the box — or in this case, Botox — when it comes to areas of the face Botox injections can be used. In addition to being Utah's leader in facial rejuvenation, their nurses and professionals point to other treatment options beyond the usual forehead wrinkles, crow's feet lines and between eyebrows typically associated with Botox. Botox can also help with depression and underarm sweating, as well as many other facts most people are surprised to learn.

Most practitioners focus around a patient's eyes for Botox treatments. A carefully placed injection, one the skilled hands of the folks at Utah Facial Plastics are expert in, can lift the eyebrows a few millimeters. While this may not sound like much, the results can be quite impactful.

In thinking briefly about human physiology, muscles can be classified as agonistic or antagonistic. Basically this equates to a "tug-of-war" of sorts in areas like eyebrows where one set of muscles is pulling up the brows, while an opposite set is pulling down. "We inject the antagonistic muscles," says Beth Sheiner, RN Utah Facial Plastics. "The result is the other set of muscles can dominate, resulting in a lift of the brows".

Eyebrows are not the only area this approach works. Injecting the muscles that pull down the corner of the mouth allows the muscles that lift the corner to take over, which minimizes downturning or frowning. A similar result can be found when injecting the muscles to the outside of the nostril allows the upper lip to relax and eliminates the gummy look when smiling - certainly something to smile about!

Speaking of smiling, another Botox use is in slimming the jawline. Famed Real Housewives of New York actress Bethenny Frankel used this very treatment to relieve tension in her jaw. Immediately after her treatment her "new look" made headlines, as the slimmer look to her lower face was very noticeable. "Using Botox around the jawline can have dramatic effects," said Shreiner. "It's wonderful we can offer this treatment to with some simple injectables and have results most people would think is only possible with surgery."

Other areas that are a candidate for Botox are around the nose, specifically to reduce "bunny lines" that may appear on some patients, as well as a nasal flare reduction. Decreasing the "orange peel" appearance of the chin and lessening neck bands are proven treatments, as well reducing a gummy smile.

Botox is also for men. While most men wear their wrinkles like a badge of honor, more and more men are choosing to eliminate their "Wall Street wrinkles" - a term coined by New York plastic surgeon Dr. Rowe. Finding the balance between rugged and youthful is something Utah Facial Plastics excels in. "We're seeing more and more men these days," says Shreiner. "Though we're far from Wall Street in the Wasatch, we can achieve the youthful, rested look today's man desires."

A wonderful side effect of Botox, proven in a recent study by the University of Basel in Switzerland is an aid for patients with major depressive disorder who have not responded to antidepressant medications. Study author M. Axel Wollmer, pointed that Botox "interrupts feedback from the facial musculature to the brain, which may be involved in the development and maintenance of negative emotions."

Where else can "Vitamin B" help? It is also used to decrease jaw clenching and grinding of the teeth. And for someone that battles with excessive underarm sweating, Botox can help there too.

For both men and women, Botox treatments only take a few minutes and can easily be done on a lunch break. With mild to no pain, there is no downtime other than five to ten minutes of minor swelling. On average, Botox takes 3-5 days to take effect, and the results can last for up to six months. Most people choose to do Botox when they begin to see the etched lines in their skin, commonly known as "static lines".
