American Fork police want to know who vandalized a memorial marker honoring slain Utah County Sheriff's Deputy Cory Wride.

Wride's family reported finding the marker had been scratched in several places and its polished granite face cracked, when they visited the monument last Saturday in American Fork's Robinson Park.

It reportedly will cost about $400 to repair the damage, which occurred less than a week from what would have been Wride's 47th birthday. Sept. 28, 1969

Wride was killed in the line of duty on Jan. 30, 2014. He was shot by fugitive Jose Angel Garcia-Juaregui while still inside his cruiser during a traffic stop on State Route 73, near Eagle Mountain.

Garcia-Juaregui, 27, was mortally wounded as law officers closed in on him a short time later on Interstate 15 in Juab County.

His then-17-year-old girlfriend, Meagan Grunwald, who was with was Garcia-Juaregui at the time of the slaying, was found guilty of first-degree felony aggravated murder and sentenced to up to life in prison. She is appealing her conviction.

Anyone with information about vandalism is asked to call American Fork police at 801-763-3020.
