A tense but brief police standoff with an armed, suicidal man had teachers and students at two nearby Sandy schools "sheltering in place" late Tuesday morning.

Sandy police Sgt. Dean Carriger said officers were called to a home near 11300 S. Hawkwood Drive (about 870 East) after a 38-year-old man, armed with a handgun, parked in the driveway outside his ex-girlfriend's residence.

Earlier, he had threatened to "blow her head off," police were told, after he was confronted inside the house. He briefly fled, but returned in the car, this time threatening to kill himself, police said.

Officers cordoned off the area, notified the schools and then set about eventually talking the suspect into surrendering his weapon and himself about 9:50 a.m.

He was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. Police will screen possible charges when he is released.

Canyons School District spokesman Jeff Haney said that while the address of the police incident was about half a mile away from Altara Elementary School (800 E. 11000 S.), restricted access was put in place as a precaution.

Alta High School, also within a mile of the crime scene, likewise was on restricted access during the incident.

No one was allowed to leave or enter the schools, but otherwise classes and activities continued unabated during the incident.
