North Salt Lake police confirmed Tuesday that a 5-year-old boy had died from injuries suffered in an auto-pedestrian collision.

Police Chief Craig Black said Raymond Zalas was hit by a Dodge Charger about 5 p.m. Monday while he was running east across U.S. 89 near 870 North.

The boy had been listed as "extremely critical" when transported to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City. He was pronounced dead late Monday night, Black said.

While investigation continued, Black said there were no initial indications that the male driver was impaired, distracted or speeding at the time of the incident.

The boy was not in a crosswalk when he purportedly darted onto the highway, heading toward the apartment complex where he lived, police said.
