A 6-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries when he was hit by a car on Highway 89 in North Salt Lake, police said.

The boy was running eastward across the highway near 870 North, but not in an intersection or crosswalk, about 5 p.m., said North Salt Lake police Cpl. T.J. DeCarlo. A northbound car struck the boy, DeCarlo said.

He was in "extremely critical condition" when he was flown to Primary Children's Hospital, DeCarlo said.

The boy was crossing the street toward an apartment complex where he lived, DeCarlo said, and investigators believe he may have been running home.
