The Bureau of Land Management's West Desert District has lifted some fire restrictions on land it administers in five Utah counties.

Campfires, smoking and cutting or welding metal are now allowed in Box Elder, Rich, Tooele, Salt Lake and Utah counties because moisture and cooler weather have reduced the fire danger.

However, the BLM still urges West Desert visitors to always take a shovel, fire extinguisher and extra water with them in case of an emergency.

Year-round fire restrictions remain in effect. Prohibited are:

• Target shooting of steel ammunition — including steel cores, tips or jackets — from June 15 to Sept. 30 each year.

• Use or possession of exploding targets.

• Use of sky lanterns or aerial luminaries.

• Use of any tracer or incendiary ammunition.

• Use of any off-road vehicle that is not equipped with a properly installed and maintained spark arrestor.
