An 18-year-old man was shot and killed at a Salt Lake City apartment complex Saturday night, police say.

The man, identified as Eric Padilla, was inside a unit on the north side of Sky Harbor Apartments (221 North Sun Arbor Terrace) with another man when there was a knock on the door about 9 p.m., said Salt Lake City police Detective Cody Lougy. They opened the door and a man outside fired at them.

Police are unsure what caused the man to shoot, but he hit and killed Padilla, who was visiting a friend. The other man inside the apartment was not injured.

"We're still piecing the case together," Lougy said.

The suspect, who police do not have in custody, is described as a man wearing dark clothes.

Anyone with information is asked to call 801-799-3000.

The case is still under investigation.
