Fire crews rushed to a two-alarm fire at an upscale apartment complex in southeast Orem about noon Monday.

Orem Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Peterson said a construction crew accidentally ignited flooring materials on the second level of the center courtyard area of the Aston at University Place apartments, 730 E. 950 South.

Workers tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire before crews arrived. Orem firefighters, seeing the potential for the flames to spread to multiple units in the four-level complex, called a second alarm.

Exactly how many residences were involved, and what dollar damages were, remained to be determined.

"I can tell you about 30 residences were evacuated, and we had personnel deployed on the second, third and fourth floors," Peterson said.

In all, about 30 firefighters from Orem, Provo and Pleasant Grove fought the blaze.

It was controlled by 1 p.m.

No injuries were reported.
