A 14-year-old student was treated for a superficial head injury after being shot with an airsoft or pellet gun while homecoming activities were wrapping up at Kearns High School on Thursday night, police say.

The ninth-grader was shot about 9 p.m. in the high school parking lot, said Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen.

As administrators were closing the school, some students lingered outside, said Steve Powell, Granite School District spokesman.

"Administrators heard tires squeal and a gun go off," Powell said, and found the injured student.

One shot was fired "from what we understand," Powell said, and the student was transported to a nearby hospital. The student left the hospital a short time later, Hansen said.

No other people were injured in the incident, Hansen said.

Police are looking for a four-door gray or silver sedan, which may be connected to the shooting, Hansen said.
