A manhunt was under way in Magna on Friday for a car thief believed to have been injured when he crashed and rolled a stolen car.

Unified Police Chief Deputy Justin Hoyal said one of his officers initiated pursuit of a speeding Dodge Charger about 3:20 a.m., near 2700 South and 7200 West. The chase was suspended moments later for public safety reasons.

However, public safety dispatchers received a 911 call at 3:35 a.m. reporting the car — determined to be stolen — had crashed through a chain link fence and rolled in a field near 7200 West and 4100 South.

When police and paramedics arrived, however, the driver had fled into the pre-dawn darkness.

UPD was checking to see if anyone had been hospitalized or received medical care for possible car accident-related injuries.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call UPD 801-743-7000.
