Provo • The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil, Gas and Mining is working to use federal funds to close six abandoned mine openings in Utah County.
The Daily Herald reports that the openings, located in Rock Canyon, Spanish Fork Canyon and Slate Canyon, are considered to pose a danger to people.
The project is estimated to cost between $20,000 and $25,000 and funding will come from the Office of Federal Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.
The division must contact the landowners to get permission to close the openings, and if a landowner declines, the mine will remain open.
Public comment on the project is open through Tuesday, and the project is scheduled to begin on Sept. 26.
