A Salt Lake City police motorcycle officer was rushed to the hospital Monday night after being hit by a car during a downtown traffic stop.

Public safety dispatchers say the officer, his bike's emergency lights activated, was pulling over a vehicle near Fremont Avenue (1100 South) and Main Street when he was struck by a second car about 7 p.m.

Initially transported in serious condition with a broken leg, the officer — whose identity was not released — was later upgraded to good condition, police said.

The second vehicle was not involved in the initial stop, but its driver's conduct is being investigated by the Utah Highway Patrol.

UHP was asked to handle the case as part of SLCPD protocol to avoid a possible conflict of interest.
