A group of bow hunters in Utah County were targeting deer Thursday night when they became the target of a man with a rifle.

The group was hunting on public land in Diamond Fork Canyon, which splits off from Spanish Fork Canyon, said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. A man purportedly confronted and threatened them — Cannon was unsure what prompted the argument — about 8:30 p.m., grabbing a rifle and firing shots.

The hunters reported hearing the rounds buzz around their heads, which Cannon said is "not uncommon" when shots are fired from close by, though no one was injured. One of the hunters retreated from the area and called police.

The man, who officers later arrested at a nearby cabin, had allegedly been drinking and using drugs before the confrontation, Cannon said. He was booked on charges of aggravated assault, use of a firearm by a restricted person and various drug offenses. The man denied firing the shots, but told deputies he had participated in the argument.
