A newly appointed state senator should really know how to clean up things.

Gov. Gary Herbert on Friday formally appointed Daniel Hemmert, vice president and owner of Red Hanger Cleaners, to the Senate. He replaces Sen. Alvin Jackson, R-Highland, who resigned the District 14 seat on July 1 to move out of state.

Red Hanger operates dry cleaning and professional laundry stores in northern Utah.

Republican delegates selected Hemmert on Aug. 6 to fill out the remainder of Jackson's term, and Herbert made the formal appointment on Friday.

"His sincere desire to enact sound fiscal, family and education policies will serve him well as he works to fulfill the demands of this position," Herbert said.

Hemmert also is the Republican nominee in the race for the seat in the Nov. 8 general election.

He faces two minor party candidates: Libertarian Joe Buchman and Curt Crosby of the Independent American Party. Democrats did not field a candidate in the race.
