A multivehicle crash involving a semi-trailer rig closed down northbound Interstate 15 near 1100 South on Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Kalaine Hawkes said at least one man appeared to have been seriously injured in the 12:40 p.m. accidents, and had to be extricated from the wreckage of a car.

The semi and its two trailers ended up on their sides, straddling several lanes.

In addition to the semi, the chain-reaction crashes involved two cars and an SUV pulling a small trailer, Hawkes said.

Salt Lake City Fire Department hazardous materials crews were called to cleanup a fuel spill from the semi's tanks.

Traffic was being diverted to nearby I-215, with cleanup expected to take at least two hours, UHP said.

By 2 p.m., one lane and the shoulder were open, according to the Utah Department of Transportation, and all lanes were opened about 3:30 p.m.
