Utah college and university students are invited to submit original essays for a competition held in conjunction with the McCarthey Family Foundation Lecture Series.

This year's lecture will feature journalist and author Tom Brokaw, an NBC News correspondent who anchored NBC Nightly News between 1982 and 2004.

The lecture, free and open to the public, will be held Oct. 29 at Rowland Hall.

Essays should be 500 words and address the following topic: "In your opinion has the integrity of the press in a free society — at a time when the media is struggling with insecurities about its financial future — been compromised? What role — positive or negative — have journalists played in the shaping of the 2016 presidential campaign?"

The winning essayist will be awarded a cash prize of $2,500.

Entries should be typed and double-spaced, and submitted by Sept. 16, by email to mkl@mklpr.com or by mail to MKL Public Relations, 1338 S. Foothill Drive, Suite 264, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84108-2321.

The winner will be announced during the lecture at Rowland Hall, and his or her essay printed in the event's program.
