Ogden • Health officials in northern Utah say a pregnant woman in Weber County has become infected with the Zika virus after traveling to Mexico.

The Standard-Examiner reports that Weber-Morgan Health Department Nursing Director MaryLou Adams says the department was notified of the woman's diagnosis on Friday.

Zika is spread primarily through bites from a specific mosquito. The health department says mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus are not found in Weber County.

Health officials are investigating whether there is a link between Zika infections in pregnant women and a rare birth defect called microcephaly.

Utah Department of Health spokeswoman Charla Haley says nine Zika cases have been reported in the state as of Tuesday.
