A 21-year-old California man was believed to have drowned in a Grand County stretch of the Colorado River Monday night.

Grand County sheriff's dispatchers received a 911 call at 6 p.m. Monday reporting the man had disappeared shortly after swimming through a white water section of the Big Bend area, 7 miles upstream from Moab.

About 20 feet from shore, he suddenly sank beneath the water and did not resurface, witnesses said.

Sheriff's deputies and members of the Grand County Search and Rescue Team, along with a helicopter and a sheriff's drone, searched through the night without success.

The search resumed Tuesday along the shoreline and on the river with boats.
