Utah urges Olympics attendees to avoid spreading Zika virus

Utah is warning those returning from the Olympics in Brazil to avoid spreading the Zika virus.

The Utah Health Department on Monday urged locals who may be returning from the Summer games in Rio de Janeiro to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes for three weeks, as the virus can be spread through bites.

The state also warned people to use condoms if their sexual partners have been to the high-risk country and to wait at least six months after having symptoms or eight weeks if there were no symptoms before trying to get pregnant.

The mosquito known to transmit the virus linked to severe birth defects isn't found in Utah but the state has had an unusual case where a caregiver contracted it locally through a relative who later died.
