A "burnout" slated for Monday and Tuesday in Big Cottonwood Canyon has been canceled so firefighting resources can be shifted to a blaze in Logan.

Firefighters and the U.S. Forest Service were planning to use the backfires to help firefighters manage the Mineral Fork Fire, reduce fuels in the canyon and protect Salt Lake City's watershed. That fire was ignited by lightning on Aug. 6 across from the Moss Ledge Picnic Area.

The cancellation means the Mill B South Fork Trail and the Broads Fork Trail will remain open.
