OGDEN • A South Ogden native is the new executive director of Utah's American Civil Liberties Union affiliate.

The Standard-Examiner reports Brittney Nystrom was chosen from a national search after Karen McCreary said in January that she would retire.

Nystrom says Utah's ACLU will continue working toward equal treatment for all, including in the LGBTQ community.

An ACLU of Utah statement says Nystrom has been an advocacy director at the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service based in D.C. since 2012.

The Bonneville High School graduate earned degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the Northwestern University School of Law.

Nystrom says she still has ties to Utah and that her parents continue to live in South Ogden.

She and her family arrived in Utah on July 20.
