A semi-tanker rig overturned on U.S. 6 in Carbon County late Monday, closing down a section of the highway for several hours.

The Utah Highway Patrol said excessive speed was likely a factor in the 6:15 p.m. accident about 35 miles north of Scofield. The westbound semi was hauling 38,000 gallons of liquid carbon dioxide when it left the roadway at milepost 209, overcorrected and rolled, landing on the passenger's side.

Troopers said the driver was unhurt, but the tanker trailer was compromised, forcing the time-consuming process of manually venting the load.

Traffic was diverted onto U.S. 89 for eastbound drivers while westbound travelers were funneled through Scofield until the scene was cleaned up and wreckage cleared.

The incident remained under investigation on Tuesday.
