An Emery County man who was a "person of interest" in his wife's July death fatally shot himself Monday at a home in Orangeville, investigators said.

Richard Maxwell, 55, was the only person of interest in the death of his wife, 47-year-old Kristi Maxwell, whose body was found July 17 in the couple's Orangeville home, according to a news release from the Emery County sheriff's office.

A relative asked deputies to check on Kristi Maxwell on July 17, sheriff's spokeswoman Janalee Luke wrote in the news release. When deputies arrived, they found Richard Maxwell pointing a gun at himself, Luke wrote. As deputies tried to get other relatives out of the house, a gunshot rang out and Richard Maxwell was found alive with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his torso.

Investigators soon found the body of his wife in the house, Luke said. Luke did not disclose the cause of her death.

Richard Maxwell remained in the hospital until last week, when he was released. On Monday, deputies received another request for a "welfare check" and went to the home where Maxwell had been staying since he left the hospital, Luke said. He had shot himself again, Luke said, this time fatally.

Luke did not say why Richard Maxwell was not taken into custody as a person of interest in his wife's death.
