A Salt Lake City police officer shot himself in the foot with a rifle on Saturday morning.

The officer — whose name was not released — was pursuing a suspect near 1300 N. 1900 West about 5:30 a.m. when he accidentally discharged the gun, said Salt Lake City police Lt. Michael Hatch.

Hatch was unsure how the officer fired the shot with his department-issued gun, but said he was transported to a local hospital and expected to recover.

"Almost every officer in their career has an accidental discharge," he said. "It's the nature of handling guns … We're human and we make mistakes."

Another officer took the male suspect into custody. The suspect allegedly fired multiple rounds of shots at a house, though no one was injured.
