Police have identified a man who was fatally struck by a TRAX light rail train in downtown Salt Lake City on Wednesday.

Salt Lake City police Detective Cody Lougy said that 22-year-old Timothy Paul Ciccone Jr., believed to be from Pennsylvania, died when he walked in front of the eastbound Red Line train at 150 E. 400 South, shortly before 5 p.m.

"He walked directly into the path of the train, and the operators honked but couldn't stop in time," Lougy said.

Witnesses told officers that it appeared Ciccone may have been trying to beat the train and misjudged its speed.

No one on the train was reported hurt.

The incident remained under investigation.
