A 50-acre grain field burned Friday when a machine being used to harvest the crop hit a rock and sparked the fire in Morgan County, fire officials said.

Smoke from the fire, which began just before 3:20 p.m. near mile marker 99 on Interstate 84, limited visibility on the freeway and closed it for some time Friday afternoon, said Morgan County Fire Department spokesman David Rich.

He estimated the crop that was lost would have been worth somewhere between $25,000 and $30,000.

Sixteen firefighters from four agencies helped extinguish the fire, Rich said, and neighbors helped dig lines around the fire with two backhoes.
