A former Alpine School District bus driver has been sentenced to 20 days in jail for driving drunk while transporting special-needs students earlier this year.

Sherry Lee Lund, 52, of Lehi, was charged in 4th District Court with one count of driving under the influence and five counts of reckless endangerment, all class A misdemeanors punishable by up to a year in jail.

On Tuesday, Lund pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and two counts of reckless endangerment. The other three counts of reckless endangerment were dismissed.

Lund asked to be sentenced immediately by Judge James Brady, who ordered the jail time as part of an 18-month probation.

Lund must report to jail within two weeks of completing a substance abuse treatment program, according to court records.

She also must pay a $1,950 fine and install an ignition interlock system on her vehicle.

Lund was arrested at about 4 p.m. on March 8, after Saratoga Springs police found the school bus parked on the side of the road near Pony Express Parkway and Redwood Road, according to city spokesman Owen Jackson.

Officers "observed the driver was impaired [and] smelled of alcohol," said Jackson, who added that testing showed Lund had a blood-alcohol level of 0.17, which is more than twice the legal limit.

He said there were four elementary school children and a teacher's aide on the bus.

Lund, who had worked as a bus driver for the school district for 27 years, was immediately placed on administrative leave. She resigned on March 10, according to school district spokesman David Stephenson.
