A teenage girl died and two others were injured during a Thursday morning rollover in southwestern Salt Lake County's Butterfield Canyon.

Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell said the car crashed at about 7 a.m. at the upper end of the canyon, near 9500 West and 13055 South, just west of Herriman.

The deceased driver was identified as 18-year-old Bailey Lynne Rupe, of Layton.

A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl riding in the car — who were able to hike out of the ravine to call for help — were reported to be in fair condition with bumps and bruises at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

Bell said there were several factors investigators were looking at in the crash. Before it went out of control and rolled down a steep, 250-foot-plus embankment from the bumpy, dirt road, the car was facing into the rising sun.

Also, the three had been out all night, and the survivors admitted they also had been drinking, Bell said.

The three were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, UPD said.
