The West Antelope Fire scorched much of Antelope Island State Park. Believed to have been sparked by lightning late last week, the blaze was difficult to fight because of the island's rugged terrain and plentiful fuels, mainly grass and sagebrush. Because of the fire, the island's campgrounds were evacuated, hiking trails were closed and a Pioneer Day celebration was canceled.
