A barbecue grill started an Orem house on fire Wednesday evening, causing "significant damage."

Crews responded to the home near 400 West and 1800 South at 6 p.m., said Orem Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Peterson.

The grill started on fire when the homeowners turned it on; the blaze spread, causing the propane tank to explode, Peterson said.

Because the grill was near the house, flames traveled to the roof, which was fully burned off. The house, Peterson said, was a "total loss" because about 75 percent was destroyed.

All six people at the home were uninjured. Peterson estimates the fire caused about $350,000 in damage.
