Adding a new, free "Midtown Trolley" through Layton and Clearfield — featuring buses that look like trolleys — is among changes the Utah Transit Authority is making on Aug. 14, one of its three annual schedule "change days."

The new Route 628 trolley bus, sponsored by local businesses to help make the service free, is among service expansions in Davis and Weber counties that are being funded in part by passage there last year of Proposition 1 to raise transit taxes.

Prop 1 failed in Salt Lake and Utah counties, but UTA also is making numerous tweaks to bus and rail schedules there to improve connections and reliability.

Using Prop 1 money, UTA says it is also adding three new northbound trips and three southbound trips on Route 455, which runs between downtown Ogden, Weber State University, Davis County and the University of Utah. Route 667, a shuttle between Lagoon and Farmington Station, will now be offered year-round on weekdays and Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Route 473, an express bus between Ogden and Salt Lake City, will add one southbound trip, and a partial northbound trip between Farmington and Weber State University.

Route 640, between Layton Hills Mall and Weber State University, will extend Saturday service to 10 p.m. and increase frequency to every 30 minutes.

UTA also is tweaking the weekend schedules of all TRAX lines and the S-Line to improve transfers.

Weekend northbound services on the Red Line will be moved 10 minutes earlier, and southbound trains will be 15 minutes earlier. Blue-Line weekend schedules will be shifted by 15 minutes. The Green Line will shift by 5 minutes. The S-Line will be shifted five minutes.

In Salt Lake County, most buses on Routes 33 and 35 on 3300/3500 South will start to run the entire length of that road without requiring transfers, and the buses will change numbers at the West Valley Central Station.

In Utah County, several small changes are scheduled to improve connections on Routes 805, 806, 821, 822, and 840.

UTA also is extending Saturday services on several bus flex routes to offer service every 60 minutes between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. More information about changes and exact route schedules is available online at rideuta.com.
