A fire on Antelope Island State Park near Great Salt Lake burned about 300 acres Friday night.

The blaze, which started about 5:30 p.m., was in the middle of the island on "difficult terrain to navigate," said Utah Department of Natural Resources spokesman Nathan Schwebach.

Crews believe the fire, several miles northwest of the Fielding Garr Ranch, was caused by lightning; several agencies were monitoring the situation Friday night and will be "aggressively fighting" it with a helicopter Saturday morning, Schwebach said. The blaze was not at all contained Friday.

The fire was not threatening any facilities, wildlife or campgrounds, though four sites from the White Rock Bay Campground were evacuated in preparation for Saturday's efforts. The ranch and all hiking trails will remain closed until the fire is extinguished, according to a news release.

"We have to be worried," Schwebach said. "Antelope Island is a valued resource."

Antelope Island State Park was scheduled to host a Pioneer Day celebration Saturday, but the event was canceled.
