A Holladay man was in fair condition with gunshot wounds and his elderly roommate behind bars on Friday.

Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell said the 54-year-old victim initially had been listed as critical, but the two bullet wounds in his abdomen turned out to be less serious than thought. The man was expected to be released from the hospital soon, possibly later Friday.

Bell said officers were called to 1879 E. Delann Lane about 11:45 p.m. Thursday. The suspect, a 72-year-old man, allegedly mistook his roommate for an intruder, shooting through the door as the victim arrived home.

Bell said it appeared the older man also may have been suffering from diminished mental capacity at the time of the shooting.

The suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of second-degree aggravated assault.

UPD officers also confiscated two firearms found with the suspect.
