A Cedar Hills boy was hospitalized, but alive, on Friday after being rescued from his burning family home by his father.

The fire started just after midnight in a two-story home on Fiddlesticks Drive near the mouth of American Fork Canyon. A teen boy in the home awakened his family, and they ran to safety, only to realize that a 12-year-old boy was still inside, Lone Peak Fire Battalion Chief Joseph McRae said.

The boy's father ran back inside and awakened his sleeping son. The pair crawled out of the home, but suffered second-degree burns to their feet and knees McRae said. The father also suffered third-degree burns to a hand.

Firefighters arrived at the residence about 12:20 a.m., after the family was already safe, he said.

"We try to tell people not to go back in, but in this case, the father definitely save his son's life," McRae said.

The boy and his father were transported to the burn unit at University Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire, which investigators believe started on the second floor, remained under investigation Friday,

Firefighters had the fire out within 30 minutes.

Early estimates place the damages at about $150,000, McRae said.
