Four people were in the hospital after a three-car crash in Layton on Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to the crash just before 4:15 p.m., near 700 South and Darlington Way, where the collision caused a truck to flip and crash through the perimeter fence at Hill Air Force Base, according to Layton Police Patrol Sgt. Ryan King.

An eastbound vehicle was improperly changing lanes, witnesses later told police, which caused another vehicle to swerve to the right and then overcorrect and cross the center median into westbound traffic. The second vehicle struck a third vehicle, which collided with a truck, King said.

The truck flipped and crashed through the fence, King said.

All occupants were wearing seat belts, and multiple air bags deployed, which King credited for preventing fatalities.

Five people were in the crash — a lone driver in the truck and two occupants in each of the other vehicles, King said.

The truck's driver walked away uninjured, but the four others were taken to local area hospitals where they were treated for head, neck and back trauma as well as trauma to their lower limbs, King said. All were expected to survive.

Though the crash was under investigation, King said there's no evidence that the driver of the vehicle that crossed the median was distracted or impaired in any way.
