Bryan Bowles, 14-year superintendent of the Davis School District, will retire from his post Aug. 31, the district announced Tuesday.

Following his retirement, Bowles will work as an associate professor at Brigham Young University's David O. McKay School of Education.

"I've appreciated the work that I've done here," Bowles said during a Tuesday meeting of the Davis Board of Eduaction. "I've had a wonderful opportunity. We've done great work together as a team and we've done it, sometimes, in very difficult situations."

An interim superintendent is expected to be chosen prior to Bowles' departure.

In a prepared statement, Davis school board President Gordon Eckersley said the board was aware of Bowles' plans and has begun discussing the transition to new leadership.

"The Davis Board of Education appreciates all that Superintendent Bowles has done for the school district over many years," Eckersley said. "It's obvious that his impact has been significant from the outstanding results in many areas."

Bowles became the Davis School District superintendent in 2002 after working as principal of Bountiful High School.

He served as president of the Utah School Superintendents Association, and has sat on the boards of trustees for Weber State University and Lakeview Hospital.

Davis School District is the state's second-largest school district, with roughly 72,000 students enrolled at 87 schools.

The district is also among the state's best-performing. Two Davis high schools earned "A" grades — out of 14 total — through the state's school grading program last year, and the district is one of only three in the nation to be included in the AP Honor Roll for all six years of the honor roll's existence.
