A family of three and their pets escaped unhurt, but their Layton house was heavily damaged by an early Thursday morning fire.

Firefighters rushed to 53 N. Talbot Drive at 12:16 a.m. after a 911 call came in reporting the backyard and patio of the house were aflame.

A man, woman, their 6-year-old daughter — and their dog, a turtle and hamsters — had evacuated the home when Layton City Fire Department crews arrived.

By the time the fire was out about a half an hour later, it had spread into the home's attic. Damages were estimated at about $80,000.

The family was taking shelter with relatives.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

In all, 27 firefighters from Layton, and the North Davis Fire District, fought the blaze.
