Ogden • Officials in northern Utah have approved a nighttime anchor fee for boaters wishing to stay on Pineview Reservoir overnight.

The Weber County Commissioners voted Tuesday to add the $15 charge in response to concerns about the safety of deputies on the lake overnight. It will cover a staffing increase from one to three officers.

Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Brandon Toll says deputies often come upon situations that they can't handle safely alone during the summer.

Huntsville Mayor Jim Truett says the large and sometimes uncooperative boating groups also create troubles for nearby residents.

Commissioners initially considered a curfew that would have shut down the lake at night. They settled on a compromise after several boaters complained during an April meeting.
