Utah Highway Patrol investigators Friday were trying to figure out why a West Jordan woman to suddenly turned around to go the wrong way on Interstate 15, resulting in a fatal car crash.

UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said it appears that 26-year-old Jessie A. Jensen was driving north on I-15, about 20 miles north of Fillmore, when she used an emergency turnout to go south in the northbound lanes. At 2:45 p.m. Thursday, her Saturn Ion — with two young girls aboard — struck a Dodge Grand Caravan head-on.

Jensen, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. However, the children were properly restrained and survived the crash, Royce said.

One child was flown to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, where she was in serious condition Friday with multiple fractures. The second child was checked out and later released by doctors, Royce said.

The driver of the van was treated for minor injuries at the Fillmore Community Medical Center.

Troopers continue to investigate what led to the crash, including whether a medical issue, drugs or alcohol were factors, or if the wrong way travel was intentional or accidental.
