A man and a woman died early Thursday when their car was rear-ended by a speeding SUV in Roy.

Roy police Officer Matt Gwynn said the crash occurred at 12:10 a.m., near 6000 S. 3500 Wes. A 16-year-old girl — the suspect in an earlier hit-and-run crash with a mailbox in neighboring Clinton — allegedly slammed her Chevrolet Tahoe intentionally into the back of a Hyundai Sonata, sending the car into a traffic signal pole.

Police had suspended their pursuit of the SUV moments earlier due to safety concerns.

The Sonata's 20-year-old driver, Maddison Haan, of West Point, was dead at the scene; her 19-year-old passenger, Tyler Christianson, of Ogden, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The 16-year-old, not having suffered serious injury, was taken into custody after fleeing on foot. After questioning, she was booked into a juvenile detention facility on suspicion of two counts of criminal homicide. Her identity was withheld because she is a juvenile.

Gwynn said formal charges would be screened once the Utah Highway Patrol completes its investigation.
