Three people are dead after a crash in Emery County on Wednesday afternoon.

A 77-year-old man was traveling east on Interstate 70 when he veered into the median about 1:50 p.m., according to a news release from Utah Highway Patrol. His truck struck a hillside near mile marker 136 in the middle of the divided highway.

The driver was transported to a local hospital, where he died. The front-seat passenger, the man's 76-year-old wife, was not wearing a seat belt and died from her injuries after being transported for care by helicopter. A third passenger, a 70-year-old woman riding in the back seat, also was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. She was the sister of one of the occupants, said UHP spokesman Todd Royce.

The three occupants, from Las Vegas, were traveling to Colorado for a family reunion, Royce said. Police are not releasing their names, pending family notification.

Neither alcohol, drugs nor speed were factors in the crash, the release states.
