Investigators say the fire that gutted a Kearns home, leaving a family of three homeless and a pet cat dead, was accidental, but they continue to look into its specific origin.

"We know it started on the deck and have ruled it accidental in nature," Unified Fire Battalion Chief Brian Anderton said Wednesday. "The exact cause remains under investigation."

The 2 p.m. Tuesday blaze, near 5900 South and 4800 West, caused an estimated $150,000 in damage. The home was fully engulfed in flames when UFA crews arrived.

It took just 10 minutes to douse the flames, but not before they had destroyed much of the home's interior.

No human injuries were reported.
