A fire gutted a Kearns home Tuesday afternoon, displacing the owners and leaving one pet dead.

Firefighters responded to the blaze about 2 p.m. and found the house "almost fully engulfed," said Unified Fire Authority Capt. Dan Brown.

When crews arrived, the residents were trying to get their dogs and cats out of the structure, near 5900 South and 4800 West, Brown said.

Officials asked the family of three to stand back while firefighters doused the growing blaze, taking about 10 minutes to put it out. One cat died in the fire.

The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage, Brown said, and the cause is under investigation.
