Ogden fire investigators believe a young boy playing with a butane torch started a weekend fire that killed him and critically injured his mother.

Ogden City Fire Marshal Kevin Brown stated Monday that it appeared the early Sunday morning fire at 225 29th Street started when the torch ignited a mattress.

Police identified the deceased as Ryder Gaspa, 4. His mother, who remained in critical condition Monday with burns from her chest to her head, was identified as Kimberly Gaspa, 28.

Firefighters and police were called to the fire about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, and while evacuating the home located the boy and mother unconscious in the basement.

The rental home did not have working smoke detectors, investigators say.

A GoFundMe page has been to solicit funds to help defray medical and funeral expenses.
