Washington • Sen. Mike Lee said that the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union mirrors a sentiment shared by many Americans and he will introduce legislation to require the United States to honor current trade agreements with the U.K.

"The decision by the British people to leave the E.U. is a rejection of centralized power and unaccountable bureaucracy, a sentiment widely shared by many Americans," the Utah Republican senator said in a statement.

U.K. voters decided in a close election Thursday to leave the union, roiling financial markets and leaving the United States and other countries scrambling to negotiate new trade agreements.

"This relationship can and should be preserved," Lee said.

The senator says he will introduce new legislation when the Senate resumes session to require the United States to honor its current agreements with the U.K. until new ones can be finalized.
