Two women critically injured in a head-on crash on a Riverton stretch of Bangerter Highway Wednesday night were upgraded to serious condition on Thursday.

Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell said women, the 30-year-old driver of a black SUV and a passenger in a gold-colored SUV, in her 60s, had been stabilized and were expected to recover.

UPD investigators believe the 30-year-old woman ran a red light about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, causing what became six-vehicle crash on Bangerter at 13400 South. It took several hours for emergency crews to clear wreckage and reopen the intersection.

"The driver of the black SUV consented to a blood draw and we will [be tested] for intoxication, but there are no obvious indications that she was intoxicated," Bell said. "[It] sounds like she just ran the red light and careened off of a few cars before hitting the gold SUV head on."

No citations were issued, as the accidents remained under investigation.
