Logan • A Utah man will stay in jail for up to a year after making a false report of a shooting at a Walmart store.

The Herald-Journal News reports that police say 28-year-old Jimmie J. Willis of Nibley called in the report after a Logan officer pulled him over in November. Willis called 911 while the officer was writing a ticket to divert his attention.

Police quickly realized there was no actual emergency, traced the call back to Willis and found him hiding at home. He was charged with obstruction of justice and making a false report.

Willis' attorney asked for leniency, saying the man is not a violent offender and "just makes dumb decisions." Willis will be eligible for work release after spending 90 days in jail.
