An 86-year-old man was in "extremely critical condition" after a FrontRunner train hit his pickup truck in Provo on Monday, police and the Utah Transit Authority said.

The Provo man, traveling west, drove his pickup truck under the crossing barriers and was hit "directly broadside" by a southbound train, said Sgt. Spencer Cannon with Utah County Sheriff's Office.

Police responded to the incident at 2800 West and 1900 North at 1:15 p.m.

The man's truck was thrown 30 to 40 yards away because of the impact, Cannon said, and he was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center for surgery.

"We're encouraged by the fact that they're still working on him," Cannon said late Monday.

UTA spokesman Remi Barron said the pickup driver "broke through the gate arms just as a south bound train went through the 2000 North Provo crossing."

The train had 30 passengers on board who were offloaded onto buses after the accident, Barron said.

He added that "all indications are that system signals and warnings were functional and operating properly."
